How to SSH on Mac

Mac OS X has a built-in SSH client called Terminal which can be used to connect to remote servers. By default, is located in Applications > Utilities folder. Double-click on the icon to start the client.

Using Terminal for SSH

At the prompt type:

$ ssh username@hostname

The first time you connect you may be prompted about a fingerprint and a bit of computer gibberish. Just type yes and continue. Then proceed to enter your password at the prompt. If the password does not seem to enter just continue entering it as your normally do. This is a normal security measure.

$ password: (password)

All information needed here is provided in the email sent to you after registering your VPS. Where username is the username provided on the email (usually "root") and hostname is the ip address provided. If propperly setup (feel free to enquire for assistance), you can also use your servers domain name. Finially, your password is also provided in this email. For example, if bob wants to connect to his server at 123.838.32.319, he would type:

$ ssh root@123.838.32.319

and then he would enter his password and be brought to the VPS's console. For the next steps make sure to check out our knowledgebase article on basic console usage!
